Babe Ruth, born, George Herman Ruth, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on, February 9, 1895. Babe was one of eight children from his parents, George Sr. and Kate Ruth. Although eight children were born from his parents only him and one other sister survived, while the other six died as infants. Babe was a rambunctious child and his parents recognized his behavior and sent him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in which was run by Catholic monks. This school would not only keep Babe disciplined but also impacted him for his love and talent of baseball. Brother Matthias was one of the monks that worked at the school. He took a very fatherly role in Babe's life and recognized his love for baseball and is talent for it. He assisted him in hitting and practiced with him and helped build his pitching and fielding skills. Babe had become an exceptional player and had an obvious future with the sport. After he became more of a developed player, Brother Matthias invited owner of the Baltimore Orioles, Jack Dunn, to see Babe's talent for himself. Babe impressed Dunn and signed a contract with the Orioles in 1914. This was Ruth's first experience on a team and the start to his long career with baseball. Only 19 at the time, Babe lacked a guardian to follow through with his contract with the team. Jack Dunn became Babe's legal guardian in order to maintain his place on the team. Ruth was given the name, "Jack's newest babe" which is where his name came from. Babe Ruth's talent was noticed at a very young age and lived on throughout his baseball career.
